The club runs a whole range of mounted and unmounted events and details or our regular events can be found below. All of our events are open to all members and details will be in the newsletter, on the calendar and on the Latest News part of our homepage so keep an eye out for upcoming events.
If you want to find out more about any of the events we offer e-mail us, label it 'Events' and we'll soon get back to you, if you have any ideas for other events you think we should attend as a club please also let us know as after all it is as much your club as ours!
We will be looking to organise some trecking opportunities throughout the year depending on interest. In the past these have been popular as they are a great way to see the edges of Sheffield from a different perspective!
We aim to run 1 or 2 friendly competitions a year; these allow anyone from the club to compete, without the pressure of an actual competition! Whether you came to trials or not they are a fantastic chance to find out more about how the BUCS team events work and enjoy a day away from all the hard work of uni!
They are run in a similar format to the BUCS competitions and consist of two rounds with people competing in teams of four and as individuals. The first round will be a dressage test, (sample dressage test available here) and the second a showjumping course which will be marked in an equitation style with the emphasis more on style and quality of riding rather than the normal showjumping point system. The height of the fences will depend on what people are confident to jump as well as the horses we are able to use that day.
The horses are selected by using a drawn order system, each person in the team will pick a horse out of a hat and that will be the horse which the ride for that round. Riders will change the horses that they are riding for the dressage round and showjumping. The warm up time for riders is restricted, for the first rider of the dressage phase they are allowed 10 mins but the three other riders are given 7 mins to warm up. In the showjumping phase everyone is given 5 mins to warm up and allowed to jump four practice fences.
They are an ideal opportunity for those who missed out at trials to get some practice in preparation for the next year as there are always people who unfortunately narrowly miss out at trials and it is really strongly recommend that they come along particularly as it allows the team captain to see them in a competitive situation (like another trial) as well as offering a great opportunity to learn a lot more about what goes on too.
Our BUCS team members attend all friendlies and are always on hand to help out and keen to give tips and advice with their BUCS experience making them great team mentors. You can choose your teams beforehand, or we can put you in random ones, its completely up to you. Although the dress code is smart we obviously don't expect everyone to have full competition gear so plain jods with a tucked in shirt is absolutely fine! (and everyone must have a plain shirt- you've all been to corp at least once on a Wednesday!)
As the club subsidise the event the cost for the whole day is just £15, which includes your horse hire for a dressage test and another horse for Showjumping, with lunch also being provided!
Our friendly competitions are always thoroughly enjoyed by both riding members and those who volunteer to help out on the day enabling it to run smoothly.
If you’ve never seen horseball, it’s a fast paced game that can be described as a cross between rugby and basketball on horses! Played in teams of 4, a football sized ball with a harness is passed between players before having the chance to shoot at the goal! It involves throwing, catching, passing, picking up, shooting and tackling!!
We run taster sessions for people to give horseball a go at Arkenfield Stables in Nottingham with Laura Simmons who trains the GB horseball team!! The horses used are mostly ex National or International level, so they know what they’re doing whilst you’re learning the basics!
In order to play horseball, we need you to be able to walk, trot and canter comfortably with no assistance. However, we match the rider to the horse, so if you're a bit nervous or not confident then let us know and we will give you a safe and steady horse to ride!! It is a really fun sport, and a great confidence builder. We start off just walking, then progress on to trot and canter for those that feel confident.
Taster sessions involves getting used to riding without using your reins, passing the ball between you, shooting using different throws, and sometimes picking up from the ground and some tackling methods. Sessions start with a warm up for the horses, before coming back to walk to start with!! Once skills have been mastered in walk, the exercises are done in trot. If people feel confident enough then there may be the opportunity to try them in canter!!
Horseball is great way to improve your confidence and to get to know more people, with a lot of interaction being needed whilst playing the game. These session are always fun, can normally costs around £25 for an hour session.
