Most members join the club as a 'Leisure' member. This membership applies to all our riders who don't make a team or don't want to be part of one. Being a leisure member is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy riding at university, have high quality lessons to improve your riding, and get the chance to hang out with like-minded horsey people! Visit us at the Sports Fair in Intro Week to sign up! Leisure members can enjoy lessons in both flatwork and jumping, take part in polo lessons (regardless of whether you have tried polo before), go hacking, and in 2018 we held our first ever beginner and leisure competition (many thanks to The University of Sheffield Alumni Foundation for their help funding this). We also hold frequent socials and have several fundraising and volunteering opportunities for the whole club to get involved with. In summary, joining the club as a Leisure member is the ideal way to make new friends and get your horsey fix whilst at University!
If you've never ridden before but would like to try it, then Beginner membership is for you! Find us at the Sports Fair during Intro Week to sign up! Beginner membership helps you start your journey into the horsey world and try a brand new sport. The club will arrange you frequent lessons for you to begin to learn how to ride, and you will have the same opportunities as our other members in terms of taking part in volunteering, fundraising and of course socials. Also in 2018, we held our first ever beginner and leisure competition (many thanks to The University of Sheffield Alumni Foundation for their help funding this). Horse riding is a very rewarding and exciting sport, and the club is here to help you make a start on your horse riding journey!
If you think you might be interested but aren't sure, keep an eye on our Facebook page and website for announcements of our Give it a Go sessions early in the academic year!
Beginner & Leisure Competition 2018
For the first time in 2018 we held a competition for beginner and leisure members, providing an opportunity for non competitive members to have a go at competing in a relaxed and positive environment. The event was generously funded by The University of Sheffield Alumni Foundation.
Many thanks to Sam Burkitt Photography for his coverage of the event!
If you would like to join the club to play polo, you will need to join as a Leisure member. Find us at the Sports Fair in Intro Week to sign up! Unfortunately we do not have a polo team at Sheffield, but this is definitely something we would look into starting if we had enough interest. However, we offer frequent polo lessons, for any competent rider regardless of whether you have tried polo before. We play polo at Robin Hood Polo Club every other weekend and, once Arena Polo starts up for the Winter Season at Leadston EC with Bramham Polo Academy, we also play every other Wednesday evening. These are the regular lesson slots and this means that there is a lesson on each week. You do not have to have played Polo before to learn how to play. Lessons are available for competent riders to learn how to play polo, please book onto one of the regular slots and let us know it is your first time. If you have never ridden before, beginner lessons can be arranged to learn how to ride Polo style, which is very similar to a Western style. Beginner rider lessons are available on demand so do not hesitate to get in touch and get booked in. In 2018 we had our first intensive Polo Camp at Leadenham Polo Club, and are hoping to make this a yearly club trip! This 4-day camp will take place either the last week of Easter or the first week after the Summer Exam period. With accommodation, breakfast, excellent instruction and a fab hot tub all included in the price, polo camp is fantastic value for money and sure to fill up quickly. Register your interest at Freshers Fair or email email@example.com to reserve your place.
Polo Transport: Polo is too far away to use the university electric cars, due to this, if you have a car, please bring it to help with transport – you will be reimbursed fuel costs.
Beginner or Leisure membership is £20, or £25 including weekly fitness sessions. We recommend including fitness as is it a great way to meet and bond with other club members!
Please note you will also have to pay for lessons on top of this membership fee.
