Most members join the club as a 'Leisure' member. This membership applies to all our riders who don't make a team or do not want to be part of one. Being a leisure member is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy riding at university, have high quality lessons to improve your riding, and get the chance to hang out with like-minded horsey people! Follow our social media and feel free to contact us if you have any questions about joining! Leisure members can enjoy lessons in both flatwork and jumping, take part in polo lessons (regardless of whether you have tried polo before), go hacking, and in 2018 we held our first ever beginner and leisure competition (many thanks to The University of Sheffield Alumni Foundation for their help funding this). We have also held very informal, relaxed, friendly competitions with other universities in past years for leisure riders.
We hold frequent socials and have several fundraising and volunteering opportunities for the whole club to get involved with. In summary, joining the club as a Leisure member is the ideal way to make new friends and get your horsey fix whilst at University!
Leisure membership is £30 plus lessons.
If you've never ridden before but would like to try it, then Beginner membership is for you! Beginner membership helps you start your journey into the horsey world and to try a brand new sport. The club will arrange frequent lessons for you to begin to learn how to ride, and you will have the same opportunities as our other members in terms of taking part in volunteering, fundraising and of course socials. Also in 2018, we held our first ever beginner and leisure competition (many thanks to The University of Sheffield Alumni Foundation for their help funding this). Horse riding is a very rewarding and exciting sport, and the club is here to help you make a start on your horse riding journey!
If you think you might be interested but aren't sure, keep an eye on our Facebook page and website for announcements of our Give it a Go sessions early in the academic year!
Beginner membership is £30 plus lessons (scroll down to see price list)
If you would like to join the club to play polo, you will need to join as a Leisure member. We don't have a polo team at the university, however we can offer frequent polo lessons and sometimes hold friendly tournaments. Lessons are available for any competent rider regardless of whether you have tried polo before. If you have never ridden before, beginner lessons can be arranged to learn how to ride polo style, which is very similar to a Western style. Beginner rider lessons are available on demand so do not hesitate to get in touch and get booked in. In 2018 we had our first intensive Polo Camp at Leadenham Polo Club, and we would love to do something like this again if our members are interested!
Polo Transport: Polo is too far away to use the university electric cars, due to this, if you have a car, please bring it to help with transport – you will be reimbursed fuel costs.
Give it a Go
We hold Give it a Go sessions in both normal riding and polo at the start of the academic year. Keep an eye on our social media for more information! You do not need to be a member of the club to come along to Give it a Go sessions.
As a club, we heavily rely on member's cars to transport people to and from lessons. If you are considering bringing your car to Sheffield, as a club we'd really encourage you to do this as it helps us out massively, and its a real shame when we have to cancel lessons through lack of drivers. You will of course be reimbursed for petrol, and driving will be shared equally between drivers in the club.
Beginner or Leisure membership is £30 for the full academic year. This does not include lessons as these are paid separately to the yards.
Your membership fee contributes towards the costs of the club, as well as allowing access to our lesson booking services, discounted lesson prices and all of our socials/events!
